BAK-TOUR MAN:Bulgarian project for high schools specializing in tourism

1998 - 2001

A bilateral student project for high schools specializing in tourism that involves three pilot schools and is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (BMAA) and KulturKontakt Austria, and carried out by k.education Agency for Projects Sofia in cooperation with the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science.

Beginning of the project: September 1998.

End of the project: April 2001.

Aim: The introduction of the profile "Tourist Management" at middle management level in three Bulgarian pilot schools, so that the curriculum proposed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science can be implemented in other high schools specializing in tourism in the country.

Emphasis:

	Writing up a curriculum
	Writing textbooks and handbooks

	Improving the infrastructure in the pilot schools (furnishing computer laboratories and training tourist agencies)
	Training teachers

Results:

300 students at three pilot schools follow the new curriculum for "Tourist Management"; the first graduates from this profile will graduate in 2005.

More than 60 teachers and principals of the three pilot schools, as well as experts from the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, participated in intensive training in the following fields of tourism, economy and information technologies:

The foundations of tourism. Creating demand

Enterprise economy

Investment and funding

Book-keeping

Hotel management

Transportation and Tourist Agency

Presentation techniques and project work

Human resources management

Booking systems in tourism

A great number of textbooks and handbooks were written and made available to the schools

The schools were furnished with modern infrastructure:

Two computer laboratories in every pilot school

One training tourist agency with a server and four working places with computers, office equipment and furniture
